What inspired you to join Pamoja online teaching community?
I first came across Pamoja in 2017 while working at UWC schools. Witnessing the students’ enthusiasm for online learning piqued my interest in the platform. The experience of teaching online during the COVID pandemic made me realise the importance of acquiring the skills needed for effective online teaching and glimpse the future of education. It motivated me to apply to teach with Pamoja. I did the initial training and I felt really comfortable as a potential Pamoja course advisor.

Can you share a memorable teaching moment or success story with Pamoja?
I thoroughly enjoy group discussions. Initially, I didn’t anticipate forming strong connections with my students through online teaching, but I eagerly look forward to these discussions now, feeling a profound sense of connection. Witnessing students, especially those who initially struggle with the target language, making efforts to communicate and express themselves is particularly rewarding. It adds a unique dimension to the online teaching experience, making each interaction meaningful and fulfilling.

How has teaching with Pamoja influenced or enhanced your overall teaching philosophy?
I’ve always enjoyed incorporating technology into teaching and learning. With Pamoja, where technology is central, I’ve adapted to support students’ learning needs in various ways that suit their learning styles. While I’m accustomed to teaching in culturally diverse schools, the online nature of Pamoja has prompted me to consider new approaches to address cultural differences.

What strategies do you employ to ensure student participation and active engagement?
In my online teaching, I prioritise student participation and engagement through various strategies, including the effective use of email and chat. I believe in maintaining constant and quick communication to ensure that students feel connected and supported. This can be challenging due to time differences, but I try my best. I actively encourage students to reach out if they ever find any aspect of the material unclear, fostering an environment where questions and concerns are welcomed. This approach not only facilitates a seamless flow of information but also creates a space where students feel comfortable expressing their thoughts and seeking clarification, ultimately enhancing their overall learning experience.
