In 2010, the first Pamoja Online International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme Courses were launched, and five years later, in 2016, Pamoja was first accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) as a Supplementary Education Programme (SEPs). The accreditation process occurs in six-year cycles, and in 2024 Pamoja are excited to be working towards maintaining this esteemed accreditation.

So, why the excitement over reaccreditation with WASC?

WASC exists as one of four US-based accreditation agencies. The agency exists to identify overseas schools that demonstrate the capacity, commitment, and competence to support high-quality student learning and ongoing school improvement. WASC accreditation is a rigorous process that evaluates schools and educational programmes against a set of high standards. The aims of WASC are to,

Advance and validate quality ongoing school improvement by supporting … member institutions to engage in a rigorous and relevant self-evaluation and peer review process that focuses on equity, inclusion, and access to high-level, rigorous learning opportunities for all students. (“ACS WASC Mission Statement – Accrediting Commission for Schools”)

As part of their accreditation process, WASC not only accredit schools but also Supplementary Education Programmes (SEPs). This accreditation recognises non-diploma granting organisations that offer programmes of education and education services for students.

For Pamoja, reaccreditation would underscore the quality and credibility of our online courses. It would assure schools, parents and students that our courses and administration meet or exceed the rigorous standards expected by the agency. This recognition enhances our global reputation and provides reassurance to our service users that Pamoja offers a solid foundation for students to flourish academically.

Commitment to Continuous Improvement

A core principle of WASC accreditation is the commitment to continuous improvement. WASC requires accredited institutions to engage in ongoing self-evaluation and external reviews. At Pamoja Education, we embrace this philosophy wholeheartedly and are reflective educators, always looking for ways to enhance our educational offerings. This continuous improvement cycle means that our students benefit from the latest advancements in online learning practice, pedagogy, and course content, keeping our courses relevant and effective.

Ensuring Quality of Teaching

For the success of any educational programme, the quality of teaching is perhaps the most critical factor. As part of the accreditation process, WASC undertake a thorough evaluation of our teaching practices, including faculty qualifications, instructional methods, and student engagement and outcome. At Pamoja, we hire experienced, well-qualified educators who are passionate about their subjects, the IB and online teaching. We provide ongoing professional development to ensure our teachers are equipped with the latest tools and techniques to deliver a high-quality, engaging, and effective experience.

Professional collaboration is a core WASC standard, we support fellowship through the ongoing development of our online ‘faculty lounge’ and a dedicated Community team.

High Academic Standards

High academic standards are the cornerstone of quality education and Pamoja is proud to maintain rigorous curriculum development, comprehensive assessment strategies, and alignment with internationally recognized educational frameworks.

WASC standards look to not only adherence to prescribed curriculum such as IB programs, but the depth of delivery in line with technological advancement, varied and challenging delivery methods, knowledge-based research and data driven decisions.

Preparing for a WASC inspection involves delving deeply into our current practice – this process is affirming when we confirm how faculty meet so many criteria, but it also encourages a reflection and growth mindset for our future delivery.

Our commitment to high academic standards ensures that our students are nurtured to develop the knowledge and skills expected of IB learners and are well-prepared for higher education, work and success in a globalised world. WASC accreditation allows Pamoja to demonstrate how it continually strives to uphold academic practices to a high standard.

Robust Governance Structure

The governance structure of an educational institution plays a crucial role in its effectiveness and accountability and WASC accreditation examines and validates the governance practices of these institutions. Pamoja Education’s robust governance structure ensures that we have clear, transparent policies and procedures in place, fostering an environment of accountability and integrity. This structure guides our operational decisions and provides the framework for Pamoja Online Courses to continue to deliver quality educational provisions and outcomes for all stakeholders.

Conclusion

As we work to retain WASC accreditation, we’re once again reminded of our steadfast focus on delivering exceptional educational experiences that empower students to achieve both personally and academically. In fact, we are thrilled at the prospect of this significant achievement, of continuing to hold this status that validates our governance structure and assures stakeholders of the credibility and quality of our courses and teaching. All whilst underscoring our commitment to both continuous improvement and upholding high academic standards and reflect our dedication to providing high-quality online education programmes.
