In 2010, the first Pamoja Online International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme Courses were launched. Five years later, in 2016, Pamoja was first accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) as a Supplementary Education Programme (SEP).
The WASC accreditation process occurs in six-year cycles, and we’re excited to be working towards maintaining this esteemed accreditation in 2024.
So, why the excitement over reaccreditation with WASC?
WASC exists as one of four US-based accreditation agencies. Its purpose is to identify overseas schools that demonstrate the capacity, commitment, and competence to support high-quality student learning and ongoing school improvement. WASC accreditation is a rigorous process that evaluates schools and educational programmes against a set of high standards. The aims of WASC are to:
‘Advance and validate quality ongoing school improvement by supporting … member institutions to engage in a rigorous and relevant self-evaluation and peer review process that focuses on equity, inclusion, and access to high-level, rigorous learning opportunities for all students.’ (ACS WASC Mission Statement – Accrediting Commission for Schools)
As part of their accreditation process, WASC not only accredit schools but also Supplementary Education Programmes (SEPs). This accreditation recognises non-diploma-granting organisations that offer programmes of education and education services for students.
For Pamoja, reaccreditation would underscore the quality and credibility of our online courses. It would demonstrate that our courses and administration meet or exceed the rigorous standards expected by the agency. This recognition enhances our global reputation and provides reassurance to our partner schools, students and families that we offer a solid foundation for students to flourish academically.
Commitment to continuous improvement
A core principle of WASC accreditation is the commitment to continuous improvement. WASC requires accredited institutions to engage in ongoing self-evaluation and external reviews.
At Pamoja, we embrace this philosophy wholeheartedly and pride ourselves on being reflective educators, who are always looking for ways to enhance our educational offering. This continuous improvement cycle means that our students always benefit from the latest advancements in online learning practice, pedagogy and course content, ensuring our courses remain relevant and effective.
Ensuring exceptional teaching quality
Teaching quality is perhaps the most critical factor in ensuring the success of any educational programme. As part of the accreditation process, WASC undertake a thorough evaluation of schools’ teaching practices, including faculty qualifications, instructional methods, and student engagement and outcome.
At Pamoja, we only recruit experienced, well-qualified IB educators who are passionate about their subjects, the IB curriculum, and online learning. Furthermore, we provide ongoing professional development to ensure our teachers are equipped with the latest tools and techniques – ensuring they can deliver a consistently high-quality, engaging, and effective studying experience.
Professional collaboration is also a core WASC standard, and we support fellowship through the ongoing development of our online ‘faculty lounge’ and a dedicated Community team.
Rigorous academic standards
High academic standards are another cornerstone of quality education. At Pamoja, we’re proud to undertake continual and rigorous curriculum development, to ensure we deliver comprehensive assessment strategies and are aligned with internationally recognised educational frameworks.
WASC standards don’t just expect adherence to prescribed curricula such as the IB, but also depth of delivery in line with technological advancement, varied and challenging delivery methods, knowledge-based research, and data-driven decisions.
Preparing for a WASC inspection involves delving deeply into our current practices. Reaffirming how comprehensively we meet the accreditation criteria is always gratifying, but this process also encourages a reflection and growth mindset to ensure we stay focused on future delivery.
Our commitment to rigorous academic standards means our students are nurtured to develop the knowledge and skills expected of IB learners, and are well-prepared for higher education, the workplace and career success in a globalised world.
WASC accreditation allows us to demonstrate how we continually strive to uphold academic practices to an exceptional standard.
Robust governance structure
The governance structure of an educational institution plays a crucial role in its effectiveness and accountability, and WASC accreditation takes these into account.
Our robust governance structure ensures we have clear, transparent policies and procedures in place, resulting in an environment of accountability and integrity. It guides our operational decisions and provides the framework for Pamoja Online Courses to continue to deliver exceptional academic outcomes for all our students.
The impact of WASC accreditation
As we work to retain WASC accreditation, we’re once again reminded of our steadfast focus on delivering outstanding educational experiences that empower students to achieve success both personally and academically.
We are delighted that the prospect of reaccreditation validates our governance structure and reaffirms the credibility and quality of our online courses for schools and families.
All whilst underscoring our commitment to both continuous improvement and upholding the highest academic standards – reflecting our dedication to empowering students to pursue their passions, so they can open up new opportunities for success.
