What inspired you to join Pamoja online teaching community?
I began teaching with Pamoja whilst on a sabbatical in Sweden. I had previously spent 15 years teaching psychology in UK schools, but didn’t have the opportunity to do this within the Swedish educational system. Teaching online was accessible to me, and something I could do regardless of location. I have continued to work with Pamoja after I moved back to the UK.

Can you share a memorable teaching moment or success story with Pamoja?
The greatest feelings of success come from positive feedback from students who say that they are enjoying the course, that they have learnt a lot and that my support has been valuable to them. Positive working relationships really can be developed in an online context!

How has teaching with Pamoja influenced or enhanced your overall teaching philosophy?
I’ve come to see myself as a ‘facilitator’ rather than a ‘teacher’ in the traditional sense, allowing students to take more ownership of their own learning. The Pamoja courses are designed to promote independent learning, and my role is to support students with that.

What strategies do you employ to ensure student participation and active engagement?
I make a point of knowing all of my students and reassure them that they can contact me with any questions or problems as they work through the course lessons. I establish weekly contact with them through online calls or messages. I aim to make online lessons interactive and provide opportunities for students to network with others in the class, despite their being in separate locations. I also monitor student progress very carefully and work with them one-to-one where more support is needed.

What advice do you give for future Pamoja students?
Studying with Pamoja may give you access to subjects that you may not otherwise have the opportunity to study. In addition, you will develop as an independent learner, which is an excellent quality, highly valued by universities and employers.
