“I got to study philosophy with an international lens”

1) What did you study with Pamoja?

Philosophy SL online.

2) What year did you graduate the IB DP?

2023.

3) Why did you choose to do a Pamoja online course?

I’ve always been very passionate about philosophy, so when the time came for me to choose my DP courses I knew I had to take philosophy. Since the course was not offered at my IB school, Pamoja offered a great opportunity for me to explore my interests while still fulfilling the DP requirements.

4) How has studying with us supported your future ambitions?

Because Pamoja is online, there is undoubtedly a higher level of self-discipline required from each learner. After 2 years of independent study, I’ve learned a lot about my personal learning style, rhythm, as well as how I work best with other students. My university decision came naturally because by then I knew my own learning preferences and habits as a result of studying with Pamoja.

5) What key skills has our flexible study approach helped you develop?

Accountability is a big one. Even though there is an online teacher and a school-based coordinator to keep you in check from time to time, I had to take charge of my own learning. The amount of effort I put into the course determined how successful I would be in the subject. That really made me realise the importance of knowing how to be an independent learner, especially as I head to university.

6) How did engaging with our international school community help with your learning?

The global classroom was perhaps my favourite part of studying with Pamoja. After creating a network to communicate with each other, group work was facilitated. I got to study philosophy with an international lens – the perspectives that were shared often covered the extremes of every issue. Most importantly, bonding with my international classmates over the essay tasks and IA deadlines (and the occasional group commiseration or procrastination) allowed me to stay sane and encouraged.

7) What advice would you share with other students thinking about studying a Pamoja online course?

Go for it! If you truly love the subject or hope to use the content at some future time, an online course is absolutely worth it. Yes, the online aspect can be intimidating, but it is something that can be overcome with patience and resilience.
